What does a transfer case do on a truck?
A truck transfer case takes the output of the transmission and splits it between the front and rear drive axles through two driveshafts, so every axle can pull. Most heavy-truck units add a low-range gear set for off-road or PTO-driven work, and many carry a PTO opening to run a pump, winch or blower.
Where is the transfer case located?
It bolts to the frame directly behind the transmission (or remote-mounts a short driveshaft back), between the transmission and the rear axle, with a second output pointing forward to the front axle. On all-wheel-drive vocational trucks — fire apparatus, mixers, oilfield and military — look under the cab floor just aft of the transmission.
